The Emerald Sanctuary

Pulchriora

She wants to know the
"Finer things" of life,
Live in luxury
And wealth, but all he
Has to his name is
A feeling of love,
Pledged eternal love.

"But what worth is love,
Poor boy? You cannot
Sell it to buy bread
Or gems or a house.
Look, boy, you must have
Worldy wealth and things
To hold my dear heart."

And so he walked off,
Sad and downtrodden,
Feeling rejected
And dejected, but
She could not have cared
Less. She cared only
For the "finer things".

And then, one day, a
Man with much money
Came to court her and
At once, her heart
Was sold to this man,
This wealthy man, and
Marriage soon occurred.

Her life proceeded not
According to her plan.
Her wealthy husband
Cared little for her
And her two daughters.
He drank and he beat
Her and the children.

Then, one night, while he
Was out with one of
His mistresses -- he
Had the fidelity
Of a lone bull in
A cow herd -- she wept
Because she had naught.

She thought: "Sure, I have
Wealth in my hands,
But where's happiness
Gone? Where's the love in
This marriage got to?"
Then she realized there'd
Never been any.

Then, she stopped weeping
And wrote a note on
A piece of paper to
Her husband. She locked
The door and she picked
Up a knife whose blade
Reflected the light...
